It was announced late Thursday afternoon that the House Finance Committee will hear Senate Bill 49 and its House version, House Bill 173, on Tuesday, February 25th at 8am. As many of you are aware, Senate Bill 49 is a dangerous bill that puts politicians in charge of women’s health care decisions. Senate Bill 49 also threatens equal access to abortion for low income women. This is blatant government interference into women’s personal decision making, but what’s worse is that this bill is virtually the same as regulations that were just adopted and are currently before the courts.
We stopped Senate Bill 49 from moving forward last year, and we can do it again- with your help! In order to do this the Legislature needs to hear from their constituents. We need people to testify at their local Legislative Information Offices or in person on Tuesday, February 25th at 8am. Our message is simple: “I am opposed to Senate Bill 49 and House Bill 173. If legislators really want to reduce the number of abortions in Alaska, there’s a better way to do it that’s safe, legal and would save the state millions of dollars – make birth control more accessible for low-income women through a Medicaid Women’s Health Program.”
Call Planned Parenthood at 770-9705 to RSVP to testify and to get more information. Thank you all for all of your hard work for women’s rights in Alaska!
Reminder: We will be ordering T-shirts in early March. They are short sleeve, light blue ladies’ T-shirts with our logo on the front and “When Women Vote, Women Win” on the back. The are available in sizes XS-XXL. They are $17 each if you order by our March 5th meeting. After that, they will be $20 each. You can let us know by e-mail if you want one at email@example.com.
